The tax office is called the Montgomery Central Appraisal District (MCAD). It is at 109 Gladstell Street in Conroe.
You can fight the "Market Value" of your home. This is what the office thinks your home would sell for on January 1st. If you think the price is too high, you should say something. You can see your bill at Tax Statement & Online Payments.

Using the internet is the best way. It is fast and easy. The MCAD website is open all the time.
You can also mail your protest or go to the office in Conroe.
If you mail it, use certified mail. This gives you a receipt. The date on the stamp is very important. If you go to the office, you can get the forms there. The tax office also has Title & Registration Forms for cars, but for taxes, you only need the protest forms.
In Texas, you must follow the rules for dates. If you miss a date, you might have to wait a whole year.
The tax year starts on January 1st. The office looks at your house on this day to decide its value.
Value Date - January 1
This is the date your property's value is measured for that tax year.
Exemption Deadline - April 15
Last day to apply for common exemptions, including the Homestead exemption.
Protest Deadline - May 15
In most cases, this is the key deadline to file your property tax protest.
Bills Sent - October 1
This is when property tax bills are typically mailed out.
Last Day to Pay - January 31
Pay by this date to avoid penalties and interest.
Most people must file their protest by May 15th. Mark this on your calendar!
You need facts to win. You can't just say the taxes are too high. You need to show why.

After you file, you will have an informal meeting. This is a quick talk with one person from the tax office. You show them your photos and facts. They might offer to lower your taxes right then. If you agree, you are done!
If you don't agree, you go to a Formal Hearing.
A group of local people called the ARB will listen to you. They are like judges. You will have about 15 minutes to talk. Be nice and show your facts. After it's over, you can tell them how they did at surveymonkey.com/r/surveyarb.
The ARB will mail you their final answer. If you still think it's wrong, you can ask for an outside person to look at it. This is called Arbitration. You pay a small fee, but if you win, you get most of it back!
Protesting lowers your home's value. Tax breaks (called exemptions) lower the amount of tax you pay on that value. You should do both!
The best one is the Homestead Exemption. In Texas, this takes $100,000 off your home's value for school taxes.

The deadline is May 15th. If that is a weekend, it moves to Monday. If you got your notice late, you have 30 days from that day. Try to do it by May 15th to be safe!
Taxes are due by January 31st. On February 1st, they add a 6% fine. Every month, they add more interest. By July, they can add a 20% fee for lawyers. It gets very expensive. You can make small payments at Tax Statement & Online Payments to help.
Go to the MCAD website and search for your address. You can see your home's history and if you have any tax breaks.
