Figuring out your tax bill might seem like hard math, but it is actually simple. Here is the formula:
(Home Value - Savings) / 100 x Tax Rate = Your Tax Bill
The "Home Value" is what the Harris Central Appraisal District (HCAD) says your home is worth. This might not be the same as the price you could sell it for. HCAD looks at your home every year on January 1st. They look at what nearby houses sold for to decide your home's value.
The "Tax Rate" is the total of all the groups we talked about. If your total rate is $2.03 and your home is worth $300,000, you would pay about $6,090 a year.

You do not have to wait for a bill to know what you owe. Texas laws say local governments must be open about their rates. You can search for your home on county websites using your name or address.

In late 2024 and early 2025, Harris County made some big changes. The county raised the property tax rate by about 10%. For a $400,000 home, this meant paying about $160 more each year.
Why did the rate go up? The county said it needed money for the jail, lawyers for the poor, and because some property values went down. They used a "disaster rule" to raise taxes without a public vote.

If you cannot pay the whole bill at once, do not worry. The Harris County Tax Office has plans to help, especially for seniors. Also, if you have a mortgage, your bank might pay the taxes for you. Just make sure they send the check on time!
Property taxes are due by January 31st each year. If you do not pay by then, you will owe extra money starting February 1st.
You can apply for free on the Harris Central Appraisal District (HCAD) website. You must own and live in the home on January 1st. You can apply between January 1st and April 30th.
